It's a tough one. I don't like the compulsory aspect of the licence - if I don't watch the BBC I shouldn't have to pay it. On the other hand it means the BBC does not owe any responsibility to advertisers, they don't show adverts between programmes, they generally make higher quality programmes than the commercial stations, they can make educational programmes that would be of no interest to commercial broadcasters and they can remain unbiased in their reporting. It also means they have a duty to the public to entertain, educate and inform that they cannot shy away from. It ALSO means we get a (small) say in their running. So really, other than the compulsory nature of the TV license, would we REALLY be better off without it? It has lead to some fantastic BBC productions over the years.
Sorry I guess the link doesn't work for some. Just look up 2007 LF-A concept and compare it with the current one.

“What they don't tell you is that Rudolf Diesel invented the engine to run on peanut oil. A clean-burning engine in 1893... so it's not his fault at all that Diesels became known as dirty engines. Once the price of crude oil fell, they say goodbye to peanuts. Of course, that wouldn't work on a large scale today with as many vehicles as we have (though a couple people are doing it by filtering used grease), it's interesting that we had a clean vehicle over 100 years ago.

How many times will they change a word that has negative connotations before they realize you can't outrun the euphemism treadmill? The phrase "mentally retarded" was picked because, at the time, it was neutral. If you want meaningful change you won't reach it playing word games. If they want meaningful change they will have to change the way people feel about people who are different from themselves. Good luck with that because people seem to be predisposed to fragment into groups and look down on people outside their group.

Cuba has trade with all nations in the world besides the US. The US has given up all efforts to sabotage its economy through secret ops. Cuba's failings at this point are almost wholly due to its central economic planning.Cubans are dependent on measly monthly rations, are prohibited from engaging in most forms of free enterprise, and are assigned their jobs by the government. Such a system that denies basic freedom on such an expansive scale for the sake of central economic planning will always fail.

How did I know that this article was going to conclude that the iPhone is better for developing apps on?"And in today's smartphone wars, whoever has the most apps wins."***** fanboy bloggers. More doesn't mean better. If you are a coder who is worth a crap at all debugging your code to work with the various different versions shouldn't be a problem. |
